Early Life

Before becoming famous, David Gulpilil grew up in the traditional Aboriginal community of Arnhem Land in northern Australia. He was born in 1953 on the country of the Mandhalpuyngu people. Gulpilil attended a mission school as a child but left at a young age in order to live in the bush and learn about his indigenous culture. In his early life, he worked as a stockman and a tracker, using his knowledge of the land and his hunting skills to assist the police in finding lost individuals.


David Gulpilil rose to fame with his breakthrough role in the film "Walkabout" released in 1971. This movie, directed by Nicolas Roeg, showcased Gulpilil's incredible talent as an actor and marked the beginning of his successful career. He went on to appear in numerous iconic Australian films, including "Storm Boy" (1976), "Rabbit-Proof Fence" (2002), and "Charlie's Country" (2013), for which he received critical acclaim. In "Walkabout," Gulpilil starred alongside fellow Australian actor Jenny Agutter.

Family Life

David Gulpilil was born to Adolphus Gulpilil and Madelaine Gulpilil, both of whom were members of the Mandhalpuyngu tribe. He had several siblings, although specific details about them are not widely known. Gulpilil was married to a woman named Robyn Djunginy, and they had a daughter together named Makayla. Unfortunately, their marriage ended in divorce, but the specific dates of their marriage and divorce are not publicly available.


David Gulpilil became the first Indigenous Australian to be awarded the Best Actor prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 2014 for his performance in "Charlie's Country."
